    It’s for a few reasons:
    (1) they want to encourage you to communicate with their customer service by the email on their site. That way they have some evidence that you are you because you logged in. I suppose they get quite a few phone calls from people trying to hijack other peoples’ accounts. I have had good success with email, and it’s for my protection and theirs so I don’t complain about that policy.
    (2) it’s easier to answer email messages than phone calls. They can outsource this work overnight to people in Asia, people who read and write English as well as you and I do, but who speak it with a thick accent.
    (3) they are a worldwide company, and toll-free numbers are nation-specific whereas toll numbers work internationally.

I know it is really frustrating whenever you need an answer urgently and you have to wait on the reply to an email support issue, but this aside, I too have had good experience with the email support team – their replies are usually prompt and thorough.
