Without transferring money first from my checking account into my PayPal account? Or do I have to request the money be transferred to PayPal, wait a couple days, then buy it?

when you first set up your paypal account, you probably set up a direct debit from your current/checking account. This will allow you to “buy” immediately, and the direct debit will take the money from your bank account later.
(but you need to have the money in the bank account or else your bank and maybe paypal will charge you)

PayPal will automatically transfer the money for you. PayPal is basically a “middle-man” for transactions. It still protects the buyer.
No you can either do an echeck or have it directly pulled from your account and be paid for instantly.
If you can, the best way is to use visa with pay pal.
