I’ve done an international money transfer before but it’s a complete rip-off. Is there a way of transfering money from my Commonwealth bank free of charge? Maybe via PayPal?

No bank in Australia offers a free transfer service. Don’t forget that transferring money to Paypal or other agents like moneybookers, xoom etc. will cost extra.
If you have an account with HSBC in Australia, you can make a local transfer to it, which will cost you $3.50 from CommonWealth bank. From HSBC Australia a transfer to HSBC UK incurs no charge.
Depends if the recipient will accept it. Paypal is expanding, but not as well established as other options.
