You need a checking account or a credit card to use paypal.
You provide the account information to them, and they verify that it’s valid.
When you buy something with paypal, you can have the credit card charged or your checking account directly debited for the amount. The person receiving the money gets an email, they log into their account, accept the funds, and the transfer is made by Paypal.
Same thing happens in reverse when you get money. They have ways of letting you access the cash, either by depositing it into your checking account or requesting a check.
When you log into your PayPal account, there are navigation buttons to send payments. You can pay by credit/debit card, or have the cash deducted straight from your bank account.
In order for you to receive a payment, somebody with a PayPal account would need to send you money through their account. They need your email address in order to do this. It’s mostly used for eBay purchases.
