There are a few models for this, fortunately, they’re not mutually exclusive either.
One HUGE advantage in selling it yourself (from your own site) is that you have a way to interact with your fans! This is a large advantage because as you talk with people, they see that you’re a real live person.
To sell it yourself, you’ll need a website. (this is a whole other topic!) take your time and ask a lot of questions before choosing a hosting provider. My main advice here is to make darn sure your domain registrar is NOT the same company as your hosting provider.
As far as the mechanics of selling music using paypal, you’d use something called “IPN” which is a way paypal alerts automated software on your website of various events (such as “So and so just sent you some cash)
In the case of digital content, you set up a handler on your website that allows people to download your goods. Once they’ve made a payment, paypal tells your website about the payment and returns them.

The “Paypal IPN” happens without any visitor interaction, it’s just one web server talking to another (well, kind of)
You can write this yourself or install software to handle this for you, If you do it yourself, I’ve got a free package you can build from:http://www.geniegate.com/other/paypal/

You should also sign up with places like cdbaby, who will help you sell your music in other ways.
Also, join the “musicthoughts” mailing list! it’s a yahoo group full of musicians with a lot of ideas about selling their own music, you’ll find a TON of ideas from these people.

Now let me answer your question. Paypal is really a media to collect money from your potential customer. But to sell your product (individual music or full album in your case), you need a store front (don’t get scared), from where your customer can purchase, pay (through paypal) and download the product.
Your best bet (in terms of simplicity) would be EBay, which can enable you to setup the store and connect your store to paypal to collect payment. Check their website (search for ‘Selling digital item’) for more details. Hope this information helps.

i would use either soundclick.com or cdbaby.com. also contact apple, i know a few local artists who use itunes for album sales if thats the direction you are heading in. soundclick is more for selling beats and instrumentals however.
