HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND???? Okay that sounds a little harsh but think about what you are saying….
I do not know you or your fly by night internet company, yet you want me to call or mail you my credit card Information? Good luck with that! Many people are spooked and will never buy anything online even with secure transactions. Do you realize the risk you are taking with the info you would have (if a person was foolish enough to do it) if their info was some how stolen from you. Finally if you have my card info, how do you plan to get your payment with it, call the credit card company? They will have you arrested.
You see paypal is giving you a service & that is why they are taking a percent. They are letting people know that their transactions are secure. They are letting them know, that you will never have their card info. They are letting them know that with any dispute, they will help to resolve it. Finally, they are giving you a way to get the funds into your bank account. You do not have to use paypal, you can use any merchant account service to do the same thing, People just use paypal cuz while they do charge you, it is a lot less then others (to include your bank) would.
When you say ‘or have their card details taken’ then do you mean that you have a card machine for them to pay with? If that is the case then they can do that over the phone – wouldnt recommend that they send you card info on an email. If you have a card machine then you will already be paying some kind of percentage wont you?
The other way of doing it is for you to give the customer your bank details and they pay you via BACS. You have to wait for 3-4 days for the payment to clear but if that is the only way you wont be charged a % then that is it.
I have to say that most people these days want that instant gratification of having paid using Paypal… if you register as a business and you investiage which solution they offer you can be paying as little as 1.4% and that it worth it if you then have the added credence that Paypal will give to your website.
There are other payment providers but all of them will charge a %.
Also look into different web solutions for online payment – we have used a company called 123 connect, based in the UK and are very helpful and have some ‘off the shelve’ e-commerce solutions if your budget is limited.
Hope that helps.
You should stick with ebay and paypal. True they take a nice amount from your profits but When you sell on ebay you are selling to the whole world, it will take allot of time and money to get half the amount of traffic you get on ebay to you own web site.
Try to make up for that small loses by selling more, FOCUS on volume, try selling on amazon too.
make listings that sell, every item should have 5-10 pictures of it in the listing, use mannequins and dress forms to get pictures that look more Professional (i buy my mannequins on amazon.com)
once you have a strong ebay/amazon business, build your own web site and use ebay and amazon to promote the web site.
hope this helps a bit.
Online businesses are offering more and more payment options to the customer. if you do not want your profits to be shared with paypal etc as commissions, your online business will have to have the option of wired transfer etc. We provide these custom options to our online clients.

Ebay works so good, you might want to reconsider. It gives the buyer some comfort to know there is a way to track what is going on, and also get some help in case of problems.
It is just a cost of doing business!

TRADERICKSWHOLESALE STRIVES TO TEACH IS CUSTOMERS THE PROPER SELLING TECHNIQUES TO MAKE THEM MORE SUCESSFUL
If you and I were to decide to go into business together, and we chose to open up a brick and mortar store on Main Street, there’s no way we’d sign an 18-month lease, order display furnishings, install carpet, hook up a phone line, and hire employees without first knowing what we’re going to sell. Yet, online retailers–or, more accurately, casual sellers who want to become successful online retailers–do it every day.
Without giving much thought to a company name, product line, or business or marketing plan, new online sellers sign up for services like Doba, work with a third-party vendor to build a webstore, and only then get around to asking, “Hey, what should I sell?” They head to eBay, see what’s selling, and then decide to sell the same products–usually consumer electronics–for slightly less than the competition. They end up being disappointed, mainly because their profit margins are so low.
The problem is that these misguided novices have nothing unique to offer, so they try to compete on price alone–an almost surefire way to go bust. One of the keys to online retail success is your ability to establish yourself as the person or the company from which to purchase a particular selection of related products. Tiger Woods, for example, would be better off selling golfing gear than home décor… something that Martha Stewart is more qualified to sell
Selling what you know
What’s interesting is that first-time online retailers often overlook their own areas of expertise and passion. A guy who’s spent his entire life fiddling around with car engines in his garage suddenly decides to start selling video games, because they’re so popular with the kids in the neighborhood. Or a gal who’s had a lifelong passion for photography decides to open her own major department store online, selling anything and everything.
Identifying your areas of expertise
Follow in the footsteps of these and other successful online retailers—sell what you know. If you have trouble identifying areas of expertise, answer these six questions:
What do you know a lot about?
What are you most passionate about?
What are my hobbies and pastimes? Are you a weekend mechanic? A seamstress? A sports fanatic? A movie buff?
How do you spend your free time?
What kind of professional training and experience do you have?
Find something that makes your eyes light up, and you’ve probably hit on the right line of products.
Researching your niche market
Once you’ve identified your niche market, you can begin researching the market to learn more about your customers’ wants and needs. The good news is that since you will be working in areas that interest you, the research won’t feel much like work.
As you begin researching your niche market, keep the following in mind:
Knowing your product is not equivalent to knowing your customer. You need to know your customers’ wants and needs. Using the products you sell and being involved with other’s who use those products can give you a clearer sense of what people need.
Base your decisions on research.. And, if you sell golf gear, for example, you may be able to do a little research by going golfing on Saturday!
Stay on the leading edge. Don’t follow the crowd by selling what they’re selling and how they’re selling it. Develop your own unique vision based on your research and your experience. Attempting to sell what’s hot usually turns into trying to sell what used to be hot and then being disappointed.
Get involved in your industry. Read trade publications related to your market, attend industry conferences and trade shows when you are able, and mingle with the people who manufacture, market, and use the products you want to sell.
Remember: Pick your niche, research your market, and then pursue it. Follow your heart, and sell what you know.
You can get it on eBay.
